" Elections are decided by relatively few voters. Not everybody needs to be convinced that their perceptions are wrong. The dial needs to move just a little to change the result." And under FPTP it's even fewer.

We are all susceptible to evolutionary cognitive biases.

In-group/out-group bias makes people wary of those considered outside the group. Historically, this helped us survive long enough to pass on our genes when rival hunting groups appeared. This bias has been exploited throughout history.

Negativity bias means we give more weight to negative news, which is likely contributing to the statistics you reference.

The availability heuristic leads us to overestimate the likelihood of events, such as being stabbed, simply because we have recently seen a few news reports about it.

We must educate people about these biases and how to think critically, evaluate sources, and weigh evidence. Until we improve in this area, we will remain too easy to manipulate as a voting population.
