Pointless, I’m afraid. The English population are in a spasm of ultra-nationalism (ironically hastened by Brexit). The myth of splendid isolation is so hard wired that there is little possibility that the larger population will see themselves as part of the European continent. I say this as a U.K. domiciled holder of an EU passport and ‘economic immigrant’. I am part of the rejoin movement, but accept that ultimately the challenge is addressing English besieged identity. Try next decade…

This is another area where a bit of planning by Labour while still in opposition would have borne dividends. They could have started hammering home the point that there would be no rejoining the EU and would respect the referendum result (acknowledging Peter’s point that the electorate has changed, surely nobody wants another referendum so soon after the last one - and it would completely overwhelm everything else they want to achieve in government). But they could have sowed the seeds of rejoining the single market or Customs Union by saying it wasn’t part of their plans but the referendum wasn’t about either of those things and so they didn’t rule out joining either of those (or something similar). That would have kept the door open. Personally I don’t love the idea of rejoining the single market, with all that implies in terms of freedom of movement and paying into the EU budget without having any say in it - it strikes me as the worst of all worlds. But having the option available would be helpful, and I think joining the Customs Union could be really helpful and impactful for exporters.

However by explicitly ruling out joining either, the government has scored another own goal, and it’s now very difficult for them to row back on it without looking weak, indecisive and duplicitous. I guess they could go into the next election with a different pledge in their manifesto. But given the tiny chances of them getting reelected, that’s too little, too late.
